The AKELA Trust is the result of a long-time dream finally fulfilled and a growing need that's existed in India for too long.
The name was inspired by Akela, a puppy born on the beach in Goa, the sole survivor of her litter who was adopted by the founder.
We understand that caring for stray animals is a topic that divides India and hope to find a solution that'll be acceptable to most.
Our Mission
-
To end the suffering of animals on the streets and care for them while at the same time creating a safer and cleaner environment for people.
-
To bridge the gap between those who are passionate toward animals and those who aren't.
-
To encourage a positive and fairer change in the archaic laws governing the rights and treatment of animals.
-
To promote a healthier and kinder attitude in the interactions with animals and discourage cruelty towards them.
-
To inspire people to adopt animals from shelters rather than buying them from breeders or puppy mills.
-
To provide educational opportunities for people to understand various animal behavior and provide them with useful tips on safe and enjoyable interaction with them.
-
To try instilling a sense of compassion in people to recognise that we have a responsibility to protect animals.
-
To join forces with like-minded organizations as well as local and state government to tackle this issue together through projects and programs that'll work toward reducing the suffering of animals.
-
To eventually provide either a home or shelter for every stray dog in Dehradun.
-
To expand to other parts of India once we have Dehradun under control.
